Rumor: Ford GT successor will go hybrid

Ford is developing an all-new mid-engined GT supercar that will feature hybrid power, according to a report from Auto Express. This model comes after Ford created the original Sixties GT40, as well as the GT, made between 2005 and 2006. By using the most advanced technology to offer massive straight-line performance, Ford is hoping to compete with Ferrari, Lamborghini and McLaren. These exclusive images that were recently revealed indicate that Ford has gone on a new design direction. It is markedly different from the 2005 GT, of which only 100 examples arrived in Europe. The GT made use of multiple styling cues from the original GT40 racer of the Sixties but to get a sharper and more modern look, it’s likely to drop the retro body panels.

The new GT is reminiscent of the 1995 Ford GT90 concept, which is powered by a 720bhp quad-turbocharged V12. The new GT will put an updated spin on the GT40’s design, with a huge front air intake, angular headlights and vents in the bonnet and flanks. What will be unchanged are the overall proportions and mid-engined configuration, helping to have balanced handling. The highlight of this new GT is that it is powered by a supercharged V8 with an electric motor driving the front wheels for the extra boost.

This set-up is similar to what’s offered on the Porsche 918 Spyder-style. The new GT also shows off its green side with the addition of stop-start and its ability to be driven solely on electricity for brief periods of time. This supercar can deliver about 600bhp, enabling it to keep up with other mid-engined supercars like the McLaren MP4-12C and Ferrari 458 Italia, as well as the successors to the Lamborghini Gallardo and Audi R8.
