2012 Honda Civic to share powerplant with Acura TSX

The production version of the 2012 Honda Civic is mostly unchanged from the two concepts (the Si Coupe and a 4-door sedan) of the model that were unveiled at the recently held Detroit Auto Show, according to a report from the Temple of VTEC. The report added that the next generation Civic Si will be available with a nearly-identical powerplant to the one that powers the much larger Acura TSX. Honda has yet to announce the official power rating but it is known that the K24 engine develops 201hp in the TSX.

This means that the Civic Si is expected to have between 200 and 210 hp. This actually isn’t an impressive improvement over the 197 hp delivered by the current Si’s 2.0-liter four-cylinder; however, the new unit will provide a greater torque.

The 2012 model is estimated to have about 170 lb-ft (230 Nm) of torque, 21% higher than the existing model’s 139 lb-ft (188 Nm). Temple of VTEC also said that the non-Si Civic coupes will have the same efficient 1.8-liter powertrain that was launched on the 8th generation model. There are rumors that the new generation will receive turbocharged petrol and diesel engines, while the current 1.3l i-VTEC hybrid appears to be a viable option.[via-4wheelsnews]
