Hyundai has been on a roll of late, turning out the fantastic Genesis Sedan and Coupe, following up with the new 2011 Sonata, and today, unveiling the Avante, which will be known here in the U.S. as the 2011 Hyundai Elantra. The new Elantra wears a completely different look from its predecessor, and that’s a very good thing.

From its streamlined, almost tear-drop profile to its sculpted and space-age front end, the new Elantra picks up where the Sonata left off, but with an edgier overall presence that fits its younger target demographic. The lines that tie the hood into the front bumper, accentuating the headlights and grille in the process are particularly pleasing to our eye..

Along the side you’ll see a character flare that’s reminiscent of the Sonata, and a rear-window finish that borrows a bit from the Genesis Coupe–both well-used family traits that add a dash of both sport and luxury to the look. Moving around to the rear of the car, we see the flowing design process continued, with the side’s flares meshing neatly with the wraparound tail lights, and the curves from the bumper coming forward to mate with the flared rear fenders.

Just over a week ago, Hyundai released official images of the car’s interior, which similarly elevates the game in the inexpensive compact sedan market, pushing overall design and materials to levels reserved for luxury cars just a handful of years ago.

As always, we’ll have to wait until we can get into a 2011 Elantra to give our first-hand take on the car, but based on the official imagery, we expect good things. Check out the video below for a quirkily-soundtracked video of the Korean-market version of the car.

The Hyundai Tucson | super speed cars (Korean: 현대 투싼), or Hyundai JM (Joyful Mover) in Japan, is a compact crossover SUV built and marketed by the Hyundai Motor Corporation. Named after a city in southern Arizona, the Tucson is slotted below the Santa Fe and Veracruz in the lineup. Tucson has been one of the most popular Hyundai models with more than 1 million units sold worldwide since its launch in 2004 as a 2005 model.

Upon introduction, the GLS 2.0 2WD is equipped with a standard 2.0-liter, I4, 140-horsepower engine that achieves 20-mpg in the city and 26-mpg on the highway. A 5-speed manual transmission with overdrive is standard, and a 4-speed automatic transmission with overdrive is optional. The Limited 2.7 4WD is equipped with a standard 2.7-liter, V6, 173-horsepower engine that achieves 18-mpg in the city and 23-mpg on the highway. A 4-speed automatic transmission with overdrive is standard.

The 2009 Tucson has changed little since its 2005 debut. The diesel engine meets the Euro-5 emissions standards and achieves 15.4 kilometers per liter fuel economy with maximum power output of 184 horsepower. The gasoline engine has a fuel economy of 11.7 kilometers per liter with a 166 horsepower. In South Korea, The diesel engine is offered in both front-wheel-drive and all-wheel drive configurations, while gasoline engine is available only in front-wheel-drive. The US model will receive a 2.4-liter four-cylinder GDI engine producing 200 horsepower and getting a six-speed automatic transmission. This engine, Hyundai says, gets almost the same power as the previous generation V6 engine while managing 20% better fuel economy than the old four-cylinder.

Hyundai Halts Sales of 2011 Sonata Over Door Lock Issues

Automotive News (you can register for free) reports that Hyundai is suspending sales of the just-introduced 2011 Sonata because front door lock modules can stick.

5,000 of the vehicles, which arrived in showrooms 2 weeks ago, are in the U.S. and so far, only about 1,300 in buyers' hands.

Parts will reach dealers beginning tomorrow and Hyundai says the sales halt will end as soon as repairs to models in stock are made.

Back from a couple of weeks learning new things and I thought I'd try one of them out.

What you see above, instead of the usual still picture, is a collage from a company called Vuvox. Photos, video, text...all kinds of stuff can be cobbled together to create a slideshow.

This is a first, stills and text only effort..about 30 minutes of trial and error on software I only heard about yesterday. My thanks to NBC News correspondent John Larson for letting me (and a roomful of about 20 others) know about it.

Is it a new way of reviewing the cars...especially once I get on top of the learning curve? I don't know. I welcome your input.

As for the Hyundai Genesis, important information that didn't fit into the quickie Vuvox:

Five-star crash ratings in all categories.

EPA estimated 18 city/27 highway miles per gallon.

Can Hyundai pull this off? Challenging Lexus (and to a lesser extent, Infiniti and Acura)? Just remember how Lexus started...by challenging Mercedes-Benz with a competitive car priced $15,000 lower.
